Bedroom Design Idea: Want to have the ultimate slumber chamber? These expert tips can help
Getting enough shut eye at night is essential to keep you in the pink of health. Your bedroom is a personal space where you not only retire to for the night, but also relax and unwind. The décor of this space plays an important part in keeping your senses calm and ensuring that you have get a good night’s sleep. We asked design experts to tell us the best way to do up the bedroom for undisturbed sleep.
Bedroom Design Idea: Choose Soothing Colours
Induce sleep with the right colours on your bedroom walls that not just make you feel rested but also create an intimate setting. Says Priyanka Mehra, Principal Architect at PS Design, “Pastel colours are best-suited for the bedroom. Think powder blue, peach, beige, white, sage green, blush pink and light grey.”
Adetee Sawhaney, Principal Designer and Director at Altus Interio adds that colours like cream, lavender, olive green and grey have a calming effect on the body and mind without putting too much strain on the eyes. They also improve one’s mood and in turn impact one’s sleep pattern.
Bedroom Design Idea: Choose the Right Lighting
Set the mood right by controlling the amount of illumination in your bedroom with the right curtains as well as fixtures. When it comes to curtains, experts suggest opting for both sheer as well as opaque fabrics. The former will allow natural light to filter in during the day, without hampering your afternoon nap with the help of the latter. Cotton, linen and velvet are great fabric options for your curtains in terms of usability and décor.
Since your bedroom is a private space where you read, relax and eventually retire for the night, Sawhaney recommends choosing different kinds of lights for each purpose. Pick ambient lighting that serves the same function as natural sunlight and creates a soothing atmosphere. If you have artwork or photos that you wish to highlight, use accent light. For reading, writing, etc, use task lighting that is more focussed and is better-suited for these activities.
Bedroom Design Idea: Banish Clutter
A messy room is likely to obstruct a good night’s sleep as a clutter-free space is more inviting and also sends a calming message to your senses. Even if you have a small bedroom, you can keep it clutter-free by opting for smart storage options. “Opt for closets which are deep enough to accommodate everything. For additional storage, ensure your nightstand has a chest of drawers to keep your daily essentials handy,” advises Mehra.
Roheena Nagpal, Principal Designer at Roheena Nagpal Design Studio recommends straight-levelled shelves with shutters for maximum storage. She also advises hoarding less and de-cluttering every few months to keep your room more organised. But if you love to hold on to old things, Sawhaney suggests choosing beds with ample storage where you can put stuff you don’t use regularly. Functional furniture pieces that double up as storage options like a decorative trunk or TV unit with drawers can further increase your storage.
Bedroom Design Idea: Make Your Bed a Sleep Haven
To get ample shut eye, it is essential to pay attention to various key components of your bed. For instance, using a good pillow, sleeping on a comfortable bed sheet and choosing the right mattress, etc.
Nagpal suggest using cotton bed linen as it is a breathable fabric. The higher the thread count, the softer its feel on the skin, making it more comforting. She advises against bedsheets with large embroidery work as they can cause discomfort. “Coordinating your linen with the duvets covers adds a sense of harmony and aesthetic elegance,” she adds.
When it comes to choosing your mattress and pillow, it is important to take into account your physical health as well as comfort. If you have health issues related to posture and back, consult an orthopaedic doctor to help you choose the right kind of mattress which is likely to be firmer than the usual varieties. Many prefer a memory foam mattress that lets you sink into it and adjusts to your body contours. Using multiple pillows or even different kinds of pillows on different nights is not uncommon. “Aesthetically, two soft pillows and two firmer, larger pillows look well-styled on a bed,” says Nagpal.
Bedroom Design Idea: Create a Cosy Nest
Personalising your bedroom space that makes you feel at peace when you enter it is a good way to ensure a good night’s sleep. Add warmth to the room with the use of rugs, dim lights, wind chimes and calming scents. “Knitted throws, cushions, an artwork, a mock fireplace, an accent wallpaper on the back wall of the bed, candles, planters and table lamps are some of the ways of adding warmth in your bedroom,” says Sawhaney.
Nagpal advises placing family and loved ones’ photos on your nightstand as they are a lovely reminder of happy memories that can bring a smile on your face every morning and before bed.
